Documentary film in Berlin: “The Liberation of Poland”
Documentary film from the series “The Unknown War” in English (1978)
“The Unknown War” is an outstanding 1978 documentary created through cooperation between the Soviet Union and the United States. It is based on over one million meters of rare frontline footage filmed by Soviet cameramen, much of which remained unseen for decades.
The project features powerful historical imagery and an international team: narration by American actor Burt Lancaster, script input by Russia expert Harrison E. Salisbury, and artistic supervision by producer Isaac Kleinerman. Soviet documentarian Roman Karmen and his team performed extensive archival research.
The film focuses on Poland, the first country attacked by Germany in WWII. Six million people perished, and concentration camps such as Majdanek claimed over 1.5 million lives. In summer 1944, the Red Army launched the liberation of Poland, costing 600,000 Soviet soldiers. By the time Warsaw was reached, the city lay in ruins.
