Euro Banknotes: New Design Planned – Final Decision in Autumn 2026
Eurozone banknotes, issued by the European Central Bank (ECB), have been in circulation since 2002. In the near future, both the front and back sides of the banknotes will be redesigned.
The “obverse” (in this case) – the front side of the banknote – usually features the portrait of a historically significant person or political figure, along with the denomination, series, serial number, and national coat of arms.
The “reverse” – the back side of the banknote – typically depicts thematic images associated with the particular note: iconic historical events, natural phenomena, landscapes, architectural landmarks, animals, and more.
Of course, these definitions of “obverse” and “reverse” cannot be applied with absolute accuracy to every banknote ever issued.
Against the backdrop of the rapid and widespread growth of online banking and the clear expansion of digital payment systems – alongside a noticeable decline in the use of cash – the ECB has concluded that it is appropriate to update the appearance of euro banknotes.
The design process for a distinctively modern look began back in 2021, as part of a transparent public consultation project. More than 365,000 people took part – including financial experts, banknote designers, and ordinary citizens from EU member states.
Based on collective preferences and the combined efforts of all participants, two main themes were selected for the future design of euro banknotes:
“European Culture” – intended to represent Europe’s cultural spaces, their unique identity, and the continent’s outstanding personalities.
“Rivers and Birds” – symbolizing the diversity and adaptability of Europe’s natural ecosystems.
The deadline for submissions to the design competition, launched on 15 July, is 18 August at 12:00 noon.
After that, the most creative entries will be showcased. An independent jury will select five finalists for each of the two themes (“European Culture” and “Rivers and Birds”).
Following the competition, the public will be able to give their feedback on the shortlisted designs for the transformation of the banknotes’ appearance.
Final decision: Autumn 2026
Introduction into circulation: Not before 2030
Note: The new series will not include a €500 banknote.
