Munich – action weeks against violence towards women 2025

20.11.2025 32

On November 21, 2025, Munich will launch its annual “Münchner Aktionswochen gegen Gewalt an Frauen”, a major citywide initiative aimed at combating physical, psychological and sexual violence against women, girls and non-binary people. The campaign is supported by the city’s Department for Gender Equality and includes dozens of events across the Bavarian capital.

Organizers emphasize that the main goal of the project is not only to raise awareness about the different forms of violence but also to strengthen practical support mechanisms for those affected. The program includes educational lectures, public discussions, expert consultations, film screenings, thematic exhibitions and meetings with organizations that provide crisis assistance.

A central topic of the campaign is domestic violence — an issue that many victims hesitate to speak about due to fear or shame. During the action weeks, information points will operate across the city, where specialists will explain available resources such as emergency hotlines, crisis centers, legal counseling and temporary safe housing for women in dangerous situations.

Munich will also feature several public installations designed to draw attention to the scale of the issue. One of the most symbolic initiatives is the illumination of municipal buildings in purple, the international color associated with the fight against gender-based violence. Cultural centers and libraries across the city will join this visual campaign.

Youth work plays a crucial role in the program. Various workshops aimed at teens will address topics such as respectful communication, emotional awareness and equality. Educators note that early prevention is essential to reduce aggressive and discriminatory behavior in the future.

Another important aspect is the involvement of men. Several male-led groups will participate in discussions and workshops dedicated to non-violent behavior, responsibility and redefining traditional masculinity.

Organizers stress that violence is not a private issue but a systemic one requiring collective responsibility. “Everyone can contribute — by supporting victims, noticing warning signs, reacting appropriately and refusing to remain silent,” the city’s statement says.

The 2025 action weeks will conclude with a series of final dialogues and the publication of educational materials intended for schools, social centers and community organizations. However, the initiative continues beyond November, as Munich maintains a year-round strategy for protecting women and non-binary individuals.
