In Munich, construction of the U5 metro line extension is actively underway, which will improve transport links in the western part of the city. The new stretch, several kilometers long, will connect the Pasing and Freiham stations, with four planned new stations: Westkreuz, Radolfzeller Straße, Riesenburgstraße and Freiham Zentrum. The goal of the project — to increase mobility for residents and relieve congestion on transport routes in densely populated areas.
Construction began in 2024, and the project cost is about 750 million euros. The new stations will not only provide access to public transport for thousands of residents but will also create conditions for development and the growth of infrastructure. Completion of the section is planned for 2040–2045, depending on construction pace and funding.
The project already received official approval from the administration of Upper Bavaria in 2020, and in May 2024 a groundbreaking ceremony took place at the site of the future Freiham Zentrum station, symbolizing the start of an active surveying campaign. Construction is being carried out on undeveloped land, which reduces the impact on existing infrastructure and lowers costs for additional reinforcements.
Once put into operation, the U5 extension will provide a direct connection between the city center and the new residential and business district Freiham, improving access to jobs and services. The project will be an important step in enhancing Munich's transport network, especially in light of population growth and the city's expanding boundaries.
